It’s taken seven years, three million pounds and an awful lot of hard work from local volunteers but the spectacular 1930s open-air swimming pool is back in business. The opening weekend (June 17/18 2017 ) was sold out but there’s a long summer ahead. (And if the weather isn’t kind, at least the water in both pools is heated.)
Built in 1937, the lido was praised as the most innovative design of its type in Britain with its tea terrace, sun deck, café and curved wings at either end. The lido has had a an up and down history since then and was in danger of being demolished. After an extensive campaign by local residents, the Save Saltdean Lido Campaign obtained a 60 year lease from Brighton and Hove Council.
The Lido will open every weekend until July 8th. After that it will open every day until September 17th.
